Why Visit a Transmission Repair Specialist
Have you ever gone to your family doctor for a medical problem and were referred to a specialist that has expertise in the ailment you have. It's not that your family doctor did not want to help, rather it's more likely that he did not have the knowledge necessary to fully diagnose and properly heal your particular ailment.
Well, when you are experiencing a transmission problem, it is equally important to visit the transmission repair specialist vs your general auto mechanic. The transmission is the most complicated component in your vehicle (yes, more complicated than the engine) and transmission diagnosis and repair should be left to a transmission specialist. Transmission shops employ mechanics with extensive transmission repair knowledge and experience. Generally, these mechanics are higher paid than the general auto repair mechanic due to their expert knowledge in diagnosing and repairing transmissions. Since general auto repair shops don't work on many transmissions, they cannot afford to have a transmission specialist or transmission re-builder on site. Our transmission shop gets many referrals from general auto repair shops for this very reason. Likewise, we refer customers to general auto repair shops or other specialty shops for issues that they are better suited for.
There are many general auto repair shops that advertise transmission replacement (generally by buying a rebuilt unit or outsourcing the repair to a transmission shop). While there are many very capable general auto repair shops out there, some of these shops lack one important thing- a transmission problem diagnostic expert mechanic. Time and time again, we have customers come to our shop after visiting a general auto repair shop convinced that they need a new transmission. On several occasions, after completing a diagnostic check on the transmission, we have determined that the transmission does not need to be replaced or rebuilt but rather another much less expensive repair will fix the problem. The vast majority of the time the general auto repair shop that recommended a new transmission was NOT trying to rip off the customer, but simply did not have the proper tools or expertise in diagnosing transmission and problems that mimic transmission symptoms.
Bottom line, if you think you may have a transmission problem do your best to visit a transmission specialist to get a proper diagnosis.
